Abstract
A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the optimum procedure for economical recovery of hydrolyzed metallic coagulants used in chemical treatment of water and wastewater. Attention was focused on alum. Experiments were aimed at determining the extent of possible coagulant recovery, the best means of separating and dewatering the remaining solids, and the effectiveness of the recovered coagulant during reuse. An economic analysis was conducted to estimate the capital cost of the process and the savings in chemical cost in operation. A computerized method was developed for determining the breakeven point in terms of treatment plant capacity.
