Logging is an industrial activity which takes place in the commercial forest lands covering 40 percent of the land area of the Pacific Northwest. Logging can--and at many locations does--degrade the quality of water in the streams draining the forest lands. The report is dedicated to the logging practices which must be adopted by the logging industry if water quality is to be protected in the streams of the Pacific Northwest. An adequate tree harvesting plan includes maps, sketches, or pictures of the area to be harvested. Specifications are given for the building, use, and maintenance of a well-designed transportation system. Sections deal with logging roads, tree cutting, log yarding, buffer strips, watershed restoration, and municipal water supply watersheds. (Author)
