Abstract
On December 9, 1985, Proctor and Gamble received a report associating the abusive ingestion of one of the Company's liquid household cleaning products with the suicidal death of a 65-year old woman. The coroner's opinion in this case states that the woman died as a result of non-medicinal detergent intoxication and that the manner of death was suicide. The product is an aqueous solution of 1% to 4% each of the following key ingredients: butyl diglycol, sodium citrate, sodium cumene sulfonate, and sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate. Analysis of the small amount of product (about 20 ml) remaining in the 28-ounce bottle found at the scene shows it to have the intended composition. Analysis of the stomach contents of the suicide victim showed the presence of an approximately one part in ten dilution of the product, water apparently being the diluent.
