Abstract
A classification system was developed to initially screen and evaluate Illinois lakes for possible Clean Lakes Program funding and for development and implementation of lake/watershed protection and management plans. Two hundred fifty-seven significant inland lakes were surveyed and evaluated in three major categories: (1) current water quality, (2) potential water quality, and (3) public benefits. An overall classification/needs assessment rating was obtained for each lake by summing the points received in the three evaluation categories. The higher the total rating on a scale of 40-350, the better candidate the lake is for Clean Lakes Program funding or implementation of protection, restoration, and management measures.
