Notes
From Ch. 22: Every effort has been made both to ensure the accuracy of this guide and to satisfy the needs of the vast majority of readers. Still, you need to understand that the federal retirement system is controlled by a complex web of laws and regulations, not all of which make perfect sense. There are innumerable variations on the retirement theme which have created exceptions to the basic rules for one group or another. And, during these turbulent times, the possibility of additional changes in law is ever present. For that reason, it is important that you regularly review your own situation with a benefits officer in your own agency. If you fell uncomfortable with the answers you are getting, ask to have your questions moved up the chain of command. In time, they will reach your agency's retirement counselor. In most cases, retirement counselors can provide you with a definitive answer. In the cases where they can't, they can get that answer form OPM's Agency services staff. Remember, it's your retirement. Take the initiative to make sure it works out the best for you. "November 2017."
