Abstract
The Cholinesterase Antagonist Monitor, CAM-1, which uses immobilized cholinesterase on a porous polyurethane pad in an electrochemical cell is able to sense the presence of low concentrations of cholinesterase inhibitors in water on a real time basis. The sensitivity of CAM-1 to organophosphates and carbamates is a function of the affinity of cholinesterase for them; thus its response is greater for those compounds which are more toxic (i.e., the detectable concentrations are inversely proportional to the LD(50)s of these pesticides). Studies were conducted to show the sensitivity of the monitor to 22 organophosphates and 7 carbamate pesticides. Correlation of the sensitivity to chemical structure of the organophosphates shows that introduction of one or two sulfur atoms into the pesticide molecules reduces the sensitivity of the instrument for it. CAM-1 is suited for monitoring of water for the presence of nonreversible cholinesterase inhibitors (i.e., nonreversible in vitro).
