Abstract
In selecting a germicide for water treatment, certain criteria are important. The effect of pH, various ions, organic matter, temperature, and other chemical and physical factors on the microbicidal efficiency of the active agent are major considerations. Compatibility with chemicals necessary to other phases of treatment of the water supply should also be weighed. An evaluation of silver, quaternary ammonium compounds and iodine, with brief coverage of chlorine dioxide, bromine and ultraviolet light is reported.
