The symposium on which this volume is based was formatted, first, to outline appropriate and noncumbersome methods for analytical decision making and, second, to make the methods easily understandable to the ordinary bench chemist so that they will actually be used. I visualize this text, actively being used, next to an analytical instrument. I hope it is clear enough so that when used, the bench chemist will be able to obtain more meaningful results that can be interpreted on short notice.
