Abstract |
The basic output of the Phase I work, described in detail in this report, is an operational plan for determining whether industrial wastes containing hazardous components can be thermally destroyed in an environmentally acceptable manner using commercial scale facilities. This plan is based on: (1) Classification, identification, prioritization and selection of wastes such that they provide a reasonable cross section of currently generated industrial wastes, with particular attention to hazardous materials; (2) A careful selection of facilities, chosen to be representative of all feasible engineering approaches based on thermal degradation; (3) Assignment of top priority wastes to specific facilities on the basis that the waste can be expected to be destroyed, transportation and handling of the waste is manageable, and all facilities will be tested using at least one priority waste. A summary presentation for each of the Phase I program activities is provided. |
