I. Summary -- II. General information and properties -- III. Pharmacokinetics -- IV. Human exposure -- V. Health effects in animals -- VI. Health effects in humans -- VII. Machanisms of toxicity -- VIII. Risk assessment -- IX. Quantification of toxicological effects of carbon tetrachloride -- X. References cited The objective of this criteria document is to assess the available data on health effects associated with exposure to carbon tetrachloride in drinking water and to recommend a maximum contaminant level. To achieve this objective, data on pharacokinetics, human exposure, accute and chronic health effects in animals and humans, mechanisms of toxicity were evaluted. Only the reports which were considered pertinent for the derivation of the maximum contaminant level are cited in the document. Particular attention was paid to the utilization of primary references for the assessment of carbon tetrachloride-induced health effects. Secondary references were used rarely. For comparison purposes, standards and criteria developed by other organizations are included and discussed in Section IX (Quantification of Toxicological Effects of Carbon Tetrachloride).
