Abstract
Perchlorate contamination is becoming a more widespread concern in the United States as sources of such contamination continue to be identified and as more sensitive analytical methods are developed that can detect this compound in soil and groundwater. Perchlorate contamination is of particular concern because of the persistent and toxic nature of this chemical and because its physical and chemical properties make it challenging to treat. In addition to its use as an oxidizer in propellants and explosives, perchlorate has a wide variety of uses in areas ranging from electronics manufacturing to pharmaceuticals. A number of issues associated with perchlorate contamination are being discussed by government, private, and other organizations and interested parties. These issues include health effects and risks, regulatory standards and cleanup levels, degradation processes, and treatment technologies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys (EPA) Federal Facilities Forum has prepared this issue paper to provide information about technologies available for treatment of perchlorate contamination in environmental media, including technologies that have been used to date and others that show potential for treating such contamination. A brief overview of key perchlorate issues is provided to give the reader context; however, these issues are not addressed in depth in this paper.
