Abstract |
Under the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to publish an annual report on remaining landfill capacity in Illinois. This is the ninth annual report. It details data on volumes of waste accepted at landfills in each county, as well as the reported remaining landfill capacity by county and region. The number of nonhazardous solid waste landfills in Illinois has declined from 146 in 1987 to 58 in 1995. Solid waste accepted at these facilities in 1995 totalled 46.8 million cubic yards. Reported remaining landfill capacity was 473.8 million cubic yards. At current disposal volumes and capacities, Illinois has 9.9 years of remaining landfill capacity if no further capacity is added. |
