Abstract
Acknowledging the steady increase in the use of rechargeable batteries, as well as potential environmental impacts resulting from their improper disposal, Congress passed the Battery Act (Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act) to facilitate the increased collection and recycling of Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) and certain SSLA (Small sealed lead-acid) rechargeable batteries. The Act targets battery and product manufacturers and battery waste handlers-not consumers. Different sections of the Act apply to different types of batteries.
