Abstract
A dermal teratology study was conducted in groups of 10 mated New Zealand White rabbits administered occluded doses undiluted 2-phenoxyethanol at dose levels of 0, 300, 600, 1000 mg/kg/day on gestation days (GD) 6-18. Mortality was observed (number not reported). Maternal toxicity was indicated in the highest dose group by a significant weight loss on GD 15-18 (Bartlett's test for Variance). Gross necropsy in does which died or were sacrificed revealed hemoglobinuria, pale livers, dark kidneys and dark urine in the bladder characteristic of the breakdown of red blood cells. One doe in the 600 mg/kg/day dose group was found to have an intussuception of the colon, while another had severe dermal irritation which appeared normal by GD 11. No evidence of embryonal toxicity was observed in rabbits in any treatment group.
