Abstract
Three healthy, young adult New Zealand White rabbits (2 male, 1 female) were the experimental animals. Just prior to dosing, a local anesthetic was placed in both eyes of each rabbit. Undiluted PPCO-M Catalyst at a dose of 0.1 mg was instilled into the conjunctival sac of the right eye. The eyelids were then gently held closed for approximately 1 second then released. The left eye served as a control for each rabbit and was treated in a manner identical to the right eye, except no test material was administered. The grades of ocular reaction were recorded at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. The corneas of all treated eyes were examined immediately after the 24-hour observation with a fluorescein sodium ophthalmic solution. Any corneas that exhibited fluorescein staining were reexamined with fluorescein at each consecutive observation. All treated eyes were washed with room temperature deionized water for one minute immediately after recording of the 24-hour observation. The eyes were scored using a slightly modified method of Draize* and Kay and Calandra.
