Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the permeation resistance of a variety of different gloves when exposed to different methacrylate monomers to enhance the existing database. A total of 31 glove and chemical combinations were evaluated. Two different permeation test methods were used. An open loop, direct gas analysis method was used to determine the breakthrough times for all the chemicals except lauryl methacrylate. Gloves in contact with this chemical were evaluated with an open loop, discrete sampling method involving a methanol splash and chemical detection by gas chromatography. The results show that the permeation rates of the various chemicals were generally related to their boiling points and that methyl methacrylate is the most aggressive chemical tested. The results also showed that the only glove that would offer protection over an 8 hour period against all the chemicals tested was the Safety 4H glove.
