Abstract
Biodegradation data obtained by measuring carbon dioxide production show FLEXOL Plasticizer DOP degrades at a rate comparable with TERGITOL Nonionic 15-S-9. Two experimental low-foam additives prepared by reacting vinyl butyl ether with 15-S and 15-5-3 backbones also were found to degrade at a rate similar to TERGITOL 15-5-9. FLEXOL Plasticizer TOF failed to show any degradation in this system over the 55-day test period. Although these rests were conducted several years ago and then were informally reported, recent interest in the biodegradability of FLEXOL Plasticizer DOP has made it desirable for these results to be published for the record. These CO2-evolution tests were preliminary to a more involved investigation which was reported in detail, where this technique was employed for measuring surfactant biodegradation. The plasticizers were not included in these reported studies due to procedural and personnel changes.
