Abstract
Bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants were exposed to O3 in open-top field-exposure chambers in early and late season studies at Corvallis, Oregon. Plants were grown in cultural systems that permitted the daily measurement of plant water use and exposed to episodically occurring levels of O3 throughout the growing season. Ozone impaired plant growth and reduced yield. In this study, we tested two hypotheses suggested from studies of the metabolic costs of avoidance and tolerance processes involved in plant response to O3. The first is that O3 increased the carbon construction cost of tissue, and the second is that O3 increased water use efficiency and delta (13)C via stomatal closure and decreased internal carbon dioxide concentration.
