Abstract | A study was conducted to provide an estimate of the cost to the nation's economy resulting from the corrosion damage to metals by exposure to polluted air. More specifically the major objectives may be stated as follows: Assess the total economic loss to the nation in dollars resulting from the increased corrosion damage of externally exposed structures or systems caused by the presence of man-made pollutants in the atmosphere; and Establish from predicted changes in population, industrial activity, technology of pollution control, corrosion prevention, external structures, and air pollution regulation on the probable size of this economic loss in 1980.
