Abstract | This document is a compilation of papers on the abundance, distribution, and testing of mercury in rocks, soils, waters, plants and the atmosphere. The report discusses known facts about mercury -- where, and in what forms and quantities mercury is found; how it behaves in air, water, and earth materials; the impact of man's activities on its distribution; and the effects of the element on our lives. Furthermore, mercury is a strategic metal, and, because the United States has traditionally relied on imports for approximately half of its requirements, there is obvious need for better understanding of the occurrence and distribution of mercury in this country. |
