Abstract
This report documents a survey of eight full-scale, operating in-vessel plants: Akron, OH (Paygro); Cape May County, NJ (Purac); Clayton County, GA Taulman; Newberg, or (Ashbrook-Simon-Hartley); Plattsburgh, NY (Fairfield); Portland, or (Taulman); Sarsota, FL (Purac); and Schenectady, NY (American Bio Tech). This study confirmed that in-vessel composting is a total system comprised of several integrally related components: materials handling, reactors, an aeration system, exterior curing/storage facilities, an odor control system, and marketing of the compost product. Inadequate or improper design, management, operation, or maintenance of any of the components will seriously impact the total system, and most likely adversely affect the compost product. The major problems encountered at these facilities were not related to the reactor itself, but to the other components: materials handling and odor control.
