Abstract
The document provides a summary of adverse effects of xenobiotics upon the pituitary gland, an endocrine gland that plays an important role in the regulation of reproductive function. The most common histopathological pituitary lesions observed following exposure to drugs and chemicals are reviewed along with the potential consequences of these lesions on physiological function and the maintenance of homeostasis. In addition, other mechanisms involved in the alteration of pituitary function are discussed. These include changes in function that occur in response to a toxicant's effect on the central nervous system or target gland and thus indirectly influence pituitary gland activity.
