Abstract
In the past two decades great strides have been made in the reduction of direct discharges of contaminants to surface waters (both freshwater and marine systems). Aquatic systems that have been the beneficiary of such abatement have shown improvements in water quality and biotic community integrity. In virtually all instances, however, the system recovery has been incomplete; surveillance and monitoring efforts continue to demonstrate the presence and impact of toxic substances. Problems of toxicity to aquatic organisms, disruption of ecosystem structure and functioning, and bioaccumulation of toxic substances in aquatic food chains are still being identified for both metals and organic chemicals.
