Abstract
The target readership of this document is primarily program managers and technical staff involved in the development and implementation of biological monitoring programs for nonwadeable streams and rivers. The document is intended to assist users in establishing or refining protocols, including the specific methods related to field sampling; laboratory sample processing; taxonomy; data entry, management, and analysis; and final assessment and reporting. It also reviews and provides information on development of monitoring designs to address certain types of environmental questions, and approaches for documenting and reporting data quality and performance characteristics for large river biological monitoring. The approaches presented are not intended to replace existing program components but may in some cases be useful for refining them. Throughout the document, large rivers is used as short-form for non-wadeable streams and rivers, which are defined as lotic systems more effectively and safely sampled with boat-based field methods than with wading techniques.
