| Abstract | The 19-acre Cryo-chem site is a metal fabricating facility in Worman, Earl Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. A woodland area is located northeast of the site, and an onsite stream has been identified west of the contaminant area. Between 1970 and 1982, chemical solvents were used at the facility at a rate of two to three 55-gallon drums per year. During this time, a chemical spill occurred at Cryo-chem, but cannot be definitely linked to the source of contamination. Well sampling conducted during 1985 and 1987 showed ground water contamination in monitoring and residential wells within 1 mile of the site, which led to a removal action that required the installation of activated-carbon filter units in 14 affected homes. The ROD addresses Operable Unit Two, the treatment of the ground water and containment of the contaminant plume. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including PCE, TCE, DCA, DCE, and TCA. |
