Abstract
EPA Region IV recently completed a study of the impacts of wastewater disposal on the ground water of three areas of the North Carolina barrier islands; Kill Devil Hills, Atlantic Beach/Pine Knoll Shores and Surf City. The study was performed in response to questions resulting from EPA Region IV's North Carolina Barrier Islands EIS (1984). The study demonstrated a simple model for describing the observed ground-water level changes caused by disposal of wastewater to the shallow aquifer system. The study also examined what were found to be the generally minor impacts of wastewater disposal on ground-water quality in the three study areas.
