Abstract
An extensive study of commercially available home water treatment units has been conducted over a 3-year period to examine organics reduction and microbiological factors. Phase 2 addressed the testing of the bulk of the home treatment units (a total of 30 commercially available units and one experimental unit in both Phases 1 and 2). Before and after filter tests were run for trihalomethanes (THMs), non-purgeable total organic carbon (NPTOC), standard plate count (SPC) bacteria, endotoxin, silver levels (where appropriate) and other peripheral tests. Data and discussions are provided on THM reduction efficiencies, microbiological effects, the lack of bacteriostatic effect from silver and silver effluent levels for the individual units.
