Abstract
The Toyota Motor Corporation and the Nissan Motor Corporation recently supplied the U.S. EPA Motor Vehicle Emission Laboratory with advanced prototype vehicles which utilize M100 (neat methanol) fuel. These vehicles both make use of nominal lean burn calibrations controlled by an exhaust gas air/fuel sensor feedback control system and four valve per cylinder technology in four cylinder powerplants. Though these vehicles share these similar technological aspects, important differences between both engine/vehicle packages exist. These two prototype vehicles have been evaluated by EPA for emissions and fuel economy. Nissan also supplied EPA with a gasoline-fueled vehicle for fuel economy and performance testing and comparison. The results from the preliminary round of testing are discussed in the report.
