Abstract
A stream classification system adopted in 1959 identified seven Montana waterways as 'Class 1--streams of national as well as state-wide significance'. This classification was applied to portions of Rock Creek and the Flathead, Big Hole, Gallatin, Madison, Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. The study describes the current ownership and land-use patterns along six of these streams (Missouri excluded). Between 45 and 85 per cent of the stream banks are in private ownership. Current land uses are predominately ranching and forested lands. Several situations are identified which could threaten the environmental corridors of the Blue-ribbon streams. Homes, cabins, resorts and businesses are being developed adjacent to the streams. An investigation of stream user attitudes indicates that a majority are attracted by the natural environment of the stream and are in fact antagonistic toward excessive development. Several alternative solutions to the pending stream preservation problem are identified. (Author)
