Abstract
This document discusses the interpretation of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone that were promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1979. These standards differ from previous NAAQS in that attainment decisions are based upon the expected number of days per year above the level of the standard. The data analysis implications of this statistical formulation of an air quality standard are presented for both compliance assessment and design value estimation purposes. Example calculations are included.
