| Abstract | The chemistry of chlorofluorocarbons and other halogenated air pollutants is discussed. A summary is presented of the present levels of concentration of such compounds, along with comments on anticipated increases. Chemical reactions that transform and remove halogenated pollutants in the troposphere are outlined. The penetration of non-reactive pollutants into the stratosphere with resultant destruction of stratospheric ozone is described. Consideration is given to future consequences of continued release of the halogen-containing air pollutants. |
