Abstract |
Embryonic cultures were used to compare the effects of five asbestos materials on a cellular, biochemical and molecular basis. Chrysotile was found to be the most cytotoxic followed by crocidolite, tremolite, amosite, and silica. Results of tests involving cellular ratios of cyclic nucleotides were consistent with asbestos acting as a promoter of carcinogenesis. Washed asbestos fibers had little or no effect on induction of DNA damage based on unscheduled DNA synthesis tests. |
