Abstract
Protection of the environment and environmental remediation requires the cooperation -at all levels- of government and industry. Intelligent processing equipment, in addition to other artificial intelligence based tools, has been used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide personnel safety and improve the efficiency of those responsible for protection and remediation of the environment. These exploratory efforts demonstrate the feasibility and utility of expanding development and widespread use of these tools. A survey of current intelligent processing equipment applications in the Agency is presented and is followed by a brief discussion of possible uses in the future.
