Abstract |
The presence of Dense Nonaqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPL) in soils and aquifers can control the ultimate success or failure of remediation at a hazardous waste site. Because of the complex nature of DNAPL transport and fate, however, DNAPL may often be undetected by direct methods, leading to incomplete site assessments and inadequate remedial designs. Sites affected by DNAPL may require a different conceptual framework to develop effective characterization and remedial actions. To help site personnel determine if DNAPL-based characterization strategies should be employed at a particular site, a guide for estimating the potential for DNAPL occurrence was developed. The approach, which uses historical site use information and site characterization data, is described in the fact sheet. |
