Abstract
Athree-part report covers several phases of the project: A renewal theoretic model is developed for the purpose of evaluating expected future damage costs due to earthquakes for a segment of a water distribution system located in a large seismic region. Occurrence of earthquakes in terms of space, size, and time distributions are combined with site functions to establish probability of levels of earthquake intensity at given sites in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas of California. An attenuation formula was derived for the Arias instrumental intensity on bedrock and constants in the formula were calibrated for the San Fernando earthquake (1971), using eight bedrock spectra derived from surface accelerograms.
