The report presents the results of a full scale demonstration project to confirm previous pilot studies and research done on the economics and feasibility of reclaiming wastewater for use at an aquatic park in a semi-arid area. The demonstration project included: (1) The construction of a 1900 cu m/day (0.5 mgd) tertiary wastewater treatment plant and a 22.7 ha (56 acre) park with recreational support facilities; and (2) The evaluation of the treatment system performance and the characteristics of the lake waters as they relate to chemical, physical, and biological quality, algal growth, plant growth, fish pathology, soil reclamation, and irrigation. The completed recreational park, officially named Apollo County Park after the Apollo 11 Capsule, attests of the economic benefits and social acceptability of wastewater renovation. The evaluation studies showed that tertiary treated water is pathogenically safe, esthetically pleasing, suitable for fish life and aquatic sports, and acceptable for irrigational use.
