Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the FAA pool of the oyster Crassostrea virginica, during exposure to four stress-inducing agents to determine whether the amino acid pool might be used to identify agents inducing stress and to monitor stress phenomena. Three natural stresses were used: (1) hyperosmotic stress induced by a salinity increase and (2) anoxia--both of which are known to cause specific metabolic changes in the FAA pool and (3) turbidity, which is known to deleteriously affect the filtering capability of many bivalves. The fourth stressing agent was drilling effluents which are by-products of oil drilling operations.
