The Butz Landfill site is an inactive landfill in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The sole-source aquifer underlying the site supplies drinking water for the vicinity, which includes approximately 3,300 people who live within three miles of the site. Beginning in 1965, municipal waste, sewage sludge/liquids, and possibly some industrial wastes were accepted at the landfill. In 1971, onsite investigations revealed well water contamination and the presence of leachate seeps. By 1973, the State ordered the landfill closed and required that corrective measures by taken. Additional onsite investigations in 1986 revealed high TCE levels in domestic wells to the south of the landfill, which prompted a request to EPA that the site be considered for emergency action. The Record of Decision addresses the first operable unit, which establishes an alternate water supply. Subsequent operable unit(s) will address remediation of the contaminated soil, surface water, and ground water. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs, including PCE and TCE.
