Abstract |
The Northern Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca regions have accommodated the transportation and refining of petroleum without serious problems from spilled oil. However, proposed activities related to the transport and use of petroleum in these regions increase the chances of significant additions of petroleum to this marine environment. This project was designed to provide an accurate and reliable set of data against which future levels of petroleum compounds can be prepared. This investigation was initiated in Feb. 1977, to measure existing levels of petroleum in Northern Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and to investigate spatial and temporal trends in occurrence, concentration, and composition of petroleum-related hydrocarbons. Sediment and/or mussel samples from 23 beaches located strategically along shipping lanes in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, San Juan Islands, and Northern Puget Sound were analyzed for n-alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons. |
