Abstract
Projections to the year 2020 indicate that the demand for water in Alabama could be 7 billion gallons per day greater than in 1970. Much of this additional water can be made available through a more intensive use of ground-water supplies and the further development of the major rivers, but a substantial part must come from storage reservoirs constructed on many of the presently undeveloped minor streams. This report identifies 44 potential reservoir sites on minor streams in Alabama, exclusive of the Alabama and the Tennessee River Basins. Each site is described with regard to location and various typographic, hydrologic, and geologic characteristics pertinent to preliminary reservoir planning and design. By virtue of those characteristics some sites are more attractive than others; and the site descriptions will serve as a basis for comparing their relative merits and for selecting those sites at which more detailed studies should be made. Construction of reservoirs at the sites catalogued would provide an aggregate storage capacity of 3,750,000 acre-feet and would add about 200,000 acres to the State's water surface. The reservoirs would provide a sustained yield of about 3.5 billion gallons per day that could be used for municipal, industrial, or agricultural water supply or to augment streamflow for navigation or water-quality control.
