Abstract
EPA is required to set emission standards for the 'other solid waste incinerators' (OSWI) category referenced under Section 129(a)(1)(E) of the amended Clean Air Act. This category currently contains pathological waste incinerators and human crematories. A representative human crematory, located at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York, was tested in support of setting these emission standards. Testing was conducted in collaboration with the Cremation Association of North America (CANA). Although emissions data are available from tests at another facility, the unit tested was not controlled and the body containers (caskets) may not have been representative. Thus, the Woodlawn facility, which involves a representative human crematory having emission controls, was selected for baseline emissions testing. Additionally, this test project would help determine the effects of secondary chamber temperature on emission levels.
