Abstract
The report gives results of a program to develop methods for the continuous extraction of representative gas samples from gas streams that exhibit compositional stratification, such as in a stack or chimney. The program considered available data in the literature, as well as field data generated during the program. Wind tunnel tests and mathematical modeling were used to develop sampling methodologies which are recommended. Results from the literature and field surveys indicate that gas stratification exists, but it is likely to be less general and less severe than particulate stratification. For a given gas stream, it is necessary to make a preliminary gas concentration survey to determine the existence of spatial stratification. The authors recommend methods for obtaining representative gas samples. They also examined the use of devices to mix stratified gas streams.
