Abstract | A computer model, called HIWAY-2, can be used to estimate the concentrations of nonreactive pollutants from highway traffic. This steady-state Gaussian model can be applied to determine air pollution concentrations at receptor locations downwind of 'at-grade' and 'cut section' highways located in relatively uncomplicated terrain. With the exception of receptors directly on the highway or within the cut, the model is applicable for any wind direction, highway orientation, and receptor location. The model was developed for situations where horizontal wind flow occurs. The model cannot consider complex terrain or large obstructions to the flow such as buildings or large trees. |

Contents Notes | A computer model, called HIWAY-2, is described that can be used to estimate the concentrations of nonreactive pollutants from hiway traffice. This steady-state Gaussian model can be applied to determine air pollution concentrations at receptor locations downwind of "at-grade" and "cut section" highways located in relatively uncomplicated terrain. For an at-grade highway, each lane of traffice is modeled as though it were a finite, uniformly emitting line source of pollution. For the cut section, the top of the cut is considered an area source. The area source is simulated by using ten line sources of equal source strength. The total source strength equals the total emissions from the lanes in the cut. The air pollution concentration representative of hourly averaging times at a downwind receptor location is found by a numerical integration along the length of each lane and a summing of the contributions from each lane. With the exception of receptors directly on the highway or within the cut, the model is applicable for any wind direction, highway orientation, and receptor location.
