Abstract
One of the main objectives guiding future research in the framework of the Florida Radon Research Program (FRRP) and of the Radon Mitigation Branch of U.S. EPA, is the need toensure the availability of technically defensible and cost effective building standards for radon protection. The document describes the preliminary methodology of a study initiated in order to develop a model-backed experimental protocol capable of: (1) identifying and then quantifying the relative importance of different radon entry pathways into a house and of the movement of radon inside the house, and (2) evaluating the effectiveness of certain radon resistant measures which may include changes in house construction as well as the manner in which certain equipment is operated. The rationale of the particular approach as opposed to using mathematical computer codes is also discussed. The macroscopic model is described at length, while the development of the corresponding experimental protocol will be a future research project. The validity of the approach will be evaluated shortly with respect to data from a research house in the Princeton, New Jersey area.
