Abstract
Relative to what is known about the behavior of microorganisms in the free-living state, very little is known about their activities in aggregates. Nevertheless, a full understanding of how complex microbial systems develop and function resides not so much in improving knowledge of either state. Rather, it will come through studies revealing the distinct ecological roles of both free-living and aggregate microbial systems, the fundamental principles governing their interactions, and the influence of periodic physical and chemical environmental changes on those interactions. Without this level of understanding, the authors activities will inevitably introduce severe disruptions into some of the basic ecological processes.
