Abstract
A review of individual home wastewater treatment system technology, emphasizing soil absorption systems, indicates the full potential of individual treatment is not being realized. Current system design, installation, and operational practices do not reflect what is known about sewage-soil interactions. A focusing activity for resolving some important technological and institutional uncertainties is needed. A reintroduction of individual system technology on a widespread basis where applicable would result in an estimated reduction in the total cost of providing treatment to the new individual home population in the 1970-1990 period.
