Abstract
In the study of oxygen transfer using fine-bubble diffusers in the presence of wastewater contaminants and surfactants, an experimental method and mathematical models were developed that can handle rapidly changing water quality under process conditions. The models were verified experimentally with tap water containing surfactants and activated-sludge mixed liquor. The pilot-scale aeration column with full-scale liquid depth under operating condition could be used to simulate the full-scale aeration tank. The variation of alpha factor in the mixed liquor can be explained by a readily measured variable, microbial oxygen uptake.
