Abstract
Some knowledge is provided on the physicochemical nature of organic adsorption from aqueous solution on activated carbon. Carbon surface characteristics, as well as interactions with adsorbates, were studied. Filtrasorb 200, a commercial activated carbon produced from coal by high temperature steam activation, was used as the adsorbent with various adsorbates. Surface characteristics of the commercial activated carbon were modified by outgassing at different temperatures, and by dry and solution oxidation. Equilibrium and kinetic studies were conducted in batch systems, under controlled conditions of pH, ionic strength and temperature. The adsorption of mercaptan butyl disulfide, parahydroxybenzaldehyde, and decane were studied.
