Abstract
This report presents information on energy requirements in municipal pollution control facilities for several major areas of interest. (1) Pumping energy for filtration and granular carbon adsorption of secondary effluent - Pumping requirements are developed for all elements of the filtration process including: (a) main stream, (b) backwash, (c) surface wash, (d) wash water return, and (e) chemical feed. (2) Heat requirements - Estimated heat requirements are developed for: (a) Building heat. For three cities, heating requirements are presented as a function of plant capacity. (b) Anaerobic digestion. Heat requirements for anaerobic digestion at 95F in standard and high rate digesters are given as a function of influent sludge temperature. (c) Heat treatment of sludges. Fuel requirements as a function of thermal treatment capacity are presented for both heat conditioning prior to dewatering and for oxidation prior to ultimate disposal. (3) Utilization of anaerobic digester gas - Cost estimates are presented for cleaning and storing digester gas, and for use as fuel in internal combustion engines that are coupled to pumps, blowers or electrical generators. (4) Secondary energy requirements - Estimations are made for off-site production of some of the consumables used in wastewater treatment processes.
