Abstract
An activated sludge culture was developed which would operate at a steady state condition. At steady state the environment of the organisms remains essentially constant over a detention period. Numerous attempts were made to develop an environment which would maintain a relatively steady state condition for an activated sludge system. In no case was it possible to maintain an environment in which the mass of activated sludge would remain constant over an indefinite period of time. In the most successful systems, the activated sludge suspended solids varied as much as five percent from one detention period to the next.
